Aim:
Introduction to basic probabilistic and statistical techniques and models applied in bioinformatics and computational molecular biology

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
A first course in probabilty theory, a first course in statistical inference

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
Lectures and computing exercises

Course contents:
Probability and statistical inference, Poisson processes and Markov chains, Random walks, Modelling of DNA sequences, Hidden markov models, estimation and hypothesis testing in problems of bioinformatics, significance computations för BLAST, continuous time Markov chains, models of evolution, phylogenetic inference.
