TAMM01 Statistical Analysis, 6 ECTS credits.
/Statistisk analys/

For:   DPU   IMM   INN   M

Prel. scheduled hours: 48
Rec. self-study hours: 112

  Area of Education: Science

Main field of studies: Mathematics, Applied Mathematics

  Advancement level (G1, G2, A): A

Aim:
The aim of the course is to give students the necessary background for design and statistical analysis of industrial experiments. The emphasis is on application of statistical theory to data, model selection, how to interpret the results and draw conclusions. After the course, the student will be able to:
  • interpret analysis of variance in various settings.
  • recognise some situations where a multiple linear regression model may be appropriate, set up the model and analyse it.
  • recognise situations where the completely randomized design, randomized complete block design and latin square may be used.
  • understand the principles of blocking.
  • design and analyse a two level factorial experiment.
  • use the MINITAB software to analyse problems in regression and experimental design.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
A first course in probability and statistics. In particular, random variables, central limit, some distributions: normal distribution, chi squared distribution, t distribution, F distribution. Basic knowledge of hypothesis testing and confidence intervals (for example, TAMS11).

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
Lectures, seminars, and obligatory laboratories.

Course contents:
Multiple linear regression, residual analysis, model building, transformation of data. Some basic models for experimental design: completely randomised design, randomised complete block design, two way models without and with interactions, Latin square designs. Introduction to design and analysis of two level factorial experiments: two level factorial designs, single degree of freedom comparisons, confounding, partial confounding, factorial experiments in fractional replications, resolution. Implementing the above for analysing data using the MINITAB statistical software.

Course literature:
Compendium containing lecture notes and examples (required). Montgomery & Runger: Applied Statistics and Probability for Engineers, John Wiley (latest edition)(recommended).

Examination:
One written examination
Laboratory work
5 ECTS
1 ECTS

Course language is English.
