Aim:
The course gives an overview on selected topics in bioinformatics with a focus on computational methods.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Basic knowledge in cell biology (e.g. TFBI17 or TFBI10). Basic knowledge in programming. Databases (e.g. TDDB38 or TDDB77).

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The lectures are devoted to theory and methods. During the assignments the theory is applied and reports are written on the course topics.

Course contents:
Methods for storage, management and analysis of biological data for use in DNA analysis and studies of the structure and function of proteins. Topics may include: Biological databanks. Data modelling. Principles for storage: text, semi-structured data, databases. Databank querying. Sequence analysis and alignment. Patterns in DNA sequences. Statistical models for biological sequences. Modelling and prediction of protein structure and folding. Data mining. Theoretical and mathematical models for biological processes. Visualization.
