Aim:
The course gives a survey of the history of mathematics through its interplay with science and technology.
|

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Pass (at least 5 points) on one of the courses Calculus A or Linear algebra.

Course contents:
Mathematics in Egypt, Babylon, Greece and India. How this mathematics was preserved, developed and introduced to Europe by the Persians and arabs. Italy and cubic equations.
The emergence of algebra. Analysis and its significance for mechanics and astronomy. Probability theory. The further development of geometry and analysis and their significance
in modern physics.
