Aim:
The course provides knowledge and understanding of analysis, modelling, and design of systems containing both analog and digital signal processing circuits as well as evaluation of the performance of such systems. The course treats industrially relevant technical problems which are multidisciplinary. After successfully completing the course, the student can:
- Specify and relate system requirements and understand and analyze various performance metrics
- Optimize and partition larger systems
- Model and design systems with both analog and digital circuits
- Apply a structured design methodology
- Manage advanced project work in an industrially professional way
- Communicate technical project results orally and in writing
A purpose for the course is also for the students to acquire knowledge and abilities within the general area of entrepreneurship, with particular focus on business planning for new ventures. After the course, students should be able to:
- account for models that describe what it takes for a new venture to have a stable basis for further development and to asess the level of development of ventures using such models; and
- account for the information and analyses needed to evaluate a development project from a business point of view and have the ability to collect and analyse relevant information for the purpose.

Organisation:
The course consists of lectures, computer-aided exercises and a design project. Within the computer-aided exercises, system simulation and practical use of state-of-the-art design tools will be practiced. The project will be managed according to the LISP project management model in groups of 6-8 participants. One project supervisor guides each project group that also has a limited access to technical expert advisors. Each project group must have a project leader and a documentation-responsible. The project work starts from a preliminary requirement specification, given by the customer, and negotiates and completes a project- and time plan before initiation of project work.

Course contents:
Particularly important course items are: understanding of system requirements and metrics of performance, system partitioning and design through the use of structured design methodologies. The project work is carried out in an industrially professional way and develops competence within the following areas: Analysis and structuring problems, search for and acquire supplementary knowledge, write and follow-up project- and time plans, actively participate in practical project work, apply knowledge from previous courses, take initiative and search for creative solutions, present results orally and in writing, model and design mixed-signal processing systems, and write and audit requirement- and design specifications.
The result of the project work shall: Be of high quality and be based on modern techniques and methodologies in signal processing systems, be documented in a project- and time plan as well as in technical reports, be presented orally, be reviewed after completion of the project, and consist of an executable simulation model for a system that satisfies the system requirements.
Theoretical course contents are: Modelling of mixed analog and digital signal processing systems. Sampling and reconstruction. Analog filtering for sampling and reconstruction, methods for compensating process and temperature variations. A/D and D/A conversion. Sample-and-hold-circuits. Performance metrics, nonlinearities and noise modelling. Digital pre- and post-processing for increased system performance. The project work contains: design of an executable simulation model of a system containing both analog and digital signal processing. The design is performed using a top-down design methodology and results in a sequence of successively refined models. These models are then the basis for further system design and verification through simulation.

The project work will be judged from the fulfilment of the course goals. Three subtopics that will be judged individually with fail or pass are considered. These are: Written technical documentation, oral presentation, and LIPS-documentation. The latter shall contain a project plan, a time plan, and an evaluation document composed according to the LIPS model. To attain a passing grade for the project, all sub-goals must be fulfilled. For a passing grade for the computer-aided exercises, a technical report must be written. For a passing grade for the complete course, both the project and the computer-aided exercises must be completed. Grades are given as â?~Failâ?T or â?~Passâ?T. |
