  Area of Education: Science

Subject area: Mathematics

  Advancement level (A-D): C

Aim:
The overarching aim of this course is to bring knowledge about statistical theory and methods, i.e. basic decision-methods applied to random data. Furthermore to point out applications in technology, economics and science. When the course is finished the student will be able to:
  • define models for describing random data
  • use statistical methods on random data
  • report on conclusions from calculations and to judge the reliability of the conclusions
  • use the statistical computerprogram named MINITAB
  • critically examine models and statistical analysis that will be met in other courses of the programme, as well as in publications (e.g. scientific documents) and in media

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Calculus, matrix algebra and a first course in probability theory.

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Supplementary courses:
TAMS23 Statistical methods in bioinformatics TAMS47 Stochastic processes TAMS75 Design and analysis of experiments TSEA69 Image Processing TSRT52 Modelling and simulation TSRT35 Control Theory TMQU17 Quality Technology

Organisation:
Teaching is performed in groups and consists of lessons dealing with theory and exercises. Obligatory computer exercises are included in the course.

Course contents:
Point estimation according to the methods of moments, maximum likelihood and least squares. Chi-square, t- and F-distributions. Confidence intervals. Hypothesis testing. Chi-square tests. Random vectors. Multivariate normal distribution. Multiple linear regression. Descriptive statistics.
