Aim:
The objectives of the course is to provide comprehensive knowledge in the following areas:
- Structural studies of proteins and biomolecules using advanced crystallographic and NMR methodologies.
- Extensive practical experience in using computer software in general use within the field to generate structural data from experimental measurements ?" from raw data to structure.
- Understand, evaluate, question and apply results from structural biology by critical reading of scientific literature and deposited structure data (in particular the PDB database).
- Propose, plan, conduct and lead projects where methodology from structural biology is applied

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
NKEC52 or TFKE12 Biochemistry 2, NKED74 Protein Chemistry, TFKE21 Protein Chemistry and TFKE 27 Protein Engineering, Biostructural technologies TFKE24
Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

|
Organisation:
Teaching is organised in lectures, lessons and laboratory tasks.
|
|
Course contents:
The lecture part gives in-depth insight in methodologies and approaches regarding structural studies of proteins and biomolecules, and builds on earlier knowledge obtained in the courses Strukturanalys av biomolekyler and Proteinkemi. One larger literature project where scientific articles within the area are read and presented to the course participants. The laboratory course consists of two larger partly teacher-directed projects, where methodology within NMR and crystallography is learned by being applied to real data, and where the projects are concluded with a written report.

Course literature:
Excerpts from reference litterature, scientific reviews and articles, and project descriptions.
