Aim:
The aim is to give an introduction to geographic information technology as well as deeper knowledge about the GIS as a tool for engineers. After the course the students should - be familiar with basic geographic information technology and understand the difference between ordinary and geographic information systems - be familiar with the most important application areas for GIS within planning for traffic and transportation - understand how GIS-applications are designed and be able to create an application using a GIS-program -be able to work independently with computers from written laboratory instructions and developed their skills to present the result in clear and well structured reports

Organisation:
The course contains lectures, small projects and laboratory work. The two latter are obligatory

Basic concepts. Applications for GIS. Geographic databases. Hardware and software. Data capture, storing, processing and presentation. Cartography. GIS analysis. Practical excercises with GIS-softwares. Simple system specification and development. Applications for transportation
