AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should:

- have knowledge of the historical importance of diversity for the social progress in Sweden
- be able to provide a historical overview of social structures that have contributed to exposed groups
- understand and explain us and them problems based on different theories of ethnicity
- be able to account for processes in immigration policy in the recent decades
- problematise present-day events compared to immigration policy movements
- analyse different education policy investments that have been used as measures for integration
- discuss class perspectives regarding segregation
- carry out an independent scholarly study of diversity.
CONTENTS
The course covers diversity issues from a national and an international perspective. These issues are also highlighted by different historical epochs. The focus, however, is on present-day theories of ethnicity, presented and problematised, which facilitates understanding of different education policy directives. The school is described as an arena for cultural encounters and diversity.

In the course, research-methodological instructions are also presented as support for the students' making of a report.
TEACHING
The teaching takes the form of lectures, literature seminars and group discussions. The student is also offered supervision during the process of writing an independent scholarly work.
EXAMINATION
Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Completion of the course Immigrant and Culture Studies or equivalent
GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
