COURSE CATEGORY   Fristående kurs
MAIN FIELD OF STUDY   Biomedicinsk laboratorievetenskap - BL1
SUBJECT AREA   Biomedicinsk laboratorievetenskap - BLA
  COURSE CODE   8FG066
AIM OF THE COURSE
INTRODUCTION

The course is eligible for students within student exchange agreements on the Biomedical Laboratory Scientist programme, as a part of their learning agreement.

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES

After completion of the course, the student is expected to;

Knowledge and understanding
- Summarize relevant research and to identify needs for development of ongoing research in the specific field,
- Identify scientific problems and formulate hypotheses and objectives.

Competence and skills
- Critically and systematically search for, review and analyse relevant scientific literature,
- Plan and conduct scientific laboratory experiments including collection of data,
- Motivate choice of methods and critically process experimental data,
- Describe scientific and statistical concepts and methods,
- Orally and in written present and discuss his/hers results in relation to relevant research.

Judgement and approach
- Practice ethical rules, laws and regulations that regulates biomedical research,
- Value facts, appearances and scientific questions within biomedicine
CONTENTS
The course includes the planning, design and implementation of scientific experiments and/or data collection, as well as analysis, interpretation and critical evaluation of results. Ethical considerations, laws and regulations that regulate laboratory work, risk assessment of laboratory exercises, environmental aspects and quality assurance of laboratory methodologies will be integrated into the specific context.

The student should work independently under supervision and show that previously acquired theoretical knowledge can be applied to an issue within Biomedical Laboratory Science
TEACHING
Student centred and problem based learning form the foundation for the teaching at the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS). The student takes responsibility for, studies and researches, current content of the courses and study programme. The working methods challenge the students to independently formulate questions for learning, to seek knowledge and in dialogue with others judge and evaluate achieved knowledge. The teacher’s role is to support the students in this way of learning.

The working methods in this course are seminars.
EXAMINATION
The examination includes writing of an individual scientific report and to orally present and defend it. Attendance (seminars) is mandatory and a prerequisite for a pass grade.
Extent of retake examination
Point of time for retake examination must be specified in the beginning of each semester. The extent of the retake examination must be the same as the regular examination. This also includes the assessment of the clinical placement.

Remaining forms of examination, such as written exams, can be taken an unlimited number of times, by students who have not obtained a pass grade.

Exchange of examiner
A student who has obtained a failing grade twice in a course or part of a course is, after request, entitled to be assigned another examiner, unless there are special reasons to the contrary.

Applying for examination/written exam

Before the course students will be informed how to apply for attendance and participation in examinations.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The course is eligible for students within student exchange agreements at the Biomedical Laboratory Science programme. To be admitted to the course, passed courses in relevant subjects covering 120 credits or equivalent, is required.
GRADING
The course is graded on the following scale: Pass; Fail.
CERTIFICATE
Course certificates are issued by the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Health Sciences, after request by the student.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of the course is to be based on the wordings in the course syllabus. A course evaluation is mandatory for each course and should include the question whether the course is in agreement with the course syllabus or not. The course coordinating teacher will analyse the course evaluation and propose appropriate improvement of the course. The analysis and proposal feedback will be given to the students, the Programme Coordinator/Director of Studies and as needed to the Board for First and Second Cycle Programmes, if it is related to general development and improvement.

The course is carried out in such a way that disabilities, ethnicity, gender and age are given prominence as relevant variables for analysis and discussion.

If the course is cancelled or undergoes major changes, examination is normally offered under this course syllabus, at a total of three occasions within a year, of which one in close proximity to the first examination.

Language of instruction is English.
