SYLLABUS
Chemistry of Natural Waters, 15 ECTS Credits

COURSE CATEGORY   Single Subject Course
MAIN FIELD OF STUDY   Vatten i natur och samhälle - VNA
SUBJECT AREA
  COURSE CODE   HTVX10
AIM OF THE COURSE
The students will obtain an interdisciplinary understanding for processes that influence the chemical composition of natural waters. This includes the joint action of physical, chemical and biological processes in catchments, watercourses, pools and lakes.
CONTENTS
The course will start with a one-week introduction giving insights in relevant parts of analytical chemistry and microbiology, followed by lectures with contents in hydrology, organic and inorganic chemistry and microbiology. The interaction between these processes and phenomenon, concerning eg. weathering of minerals and degradation of organic matter, will be the unifying concepts. A large part of the course (five of the ten course points) will be based on practical, laboratory work. This course part will be based on analysis of natural waters, exemplifying process etc discussed in the lecturers and accounted for in written reports. The course also contains a laboratory-based assignment that will result in an oral presentation and a written report from each student group.
TEACHING
The teaching will be performed as lectures, practical (lab) work, computer exercises, seminars and a project assignment.
EXAMINATION
Practical work: Laboratory reports and oral presentation theory. Assigned project, a written report and an oral presentation.
Theoretical past: Written examination.

Students who have failed an examination are normally allowed to retake it on two additional occasions, one of which should be arranged shortly after the first examination.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course three times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible to the course the student must, except the general entrance requirements have fulfilled 40 points in chemistry/biology/environmental science or equivalent.
GRADING
The course is graded according to the ECTS grading scale A-F
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
