AIM OF THE COURSE
The aim of the course is for the students to
- be acquainted with the meaning, experience and management of illness in everyday life, in contrast to a biomedical perspective
- be acquainted with the social scientific conceptualisations and theories within these areas as well as with social scientific conceptualisations of the body
- be able to interpret and critically discuss recent theoretical developments - - have sufficient competence in the field, to make an original albeit limited analysis of empirical material.
CONTENTS
The course will deal with the subjective, social and cultural dimensions of health, disease and the body, as well as with the interplay between these dimensions. Specific topics to be covered from empirical and theoretical vantage points are: everyday conceptions (social representations) of health and illness, the experience and management of health and illness in everyday life, the place and importance of the body in social theory, adherence and responses to medical prescriptions and health promoting programmes, attitudes towards medical science, medical professionals and other care providers. The focus of the course is on the situations in contemporary western societies.
TEACHING
Lectures, individual work and seminars. Alternatively as an individual course: tutorials and written assignment.
EXAMINATION
Active participation in seminars. Discussion of short papers presented by the students. Alternatively as an individual course: A written assignment.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Admission to the Master program in Health and Society or, as a single subject course, a Swedish “grundexamen” (fil. kand.), an international degree corresponding to a Bachelor in Arts and/or Science or studies up to a documented equivalent level.
GRADING
The course is graded according to the ECTS grading scale A-F
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
