AIM OF THE COURSE | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The aim of the course is for the student to gain basic insight into Swedish history and culture. The student will gain not only knowledge from recent scholarship, but also from the landscape of the region which provides a rich selection of experiences, from archaeologial remains to modern 21st century society, and the region will be actively utilised in the course. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The course is structured into four modules that will run four weeks. These modules are organized with both thematic and chronological elements: - From the Distant Past - This module covers the period up to the Middle Ages. - The Middle Ages and the Age of Greatness. - The 18th and 19th Centuries. A new Sweden takes shape. - The 20th century and beyond. Each module deals with the history and culture of Sweden during the period, including archaeology, art, architecture and the development of the landscape, as well as history and history of religion. |

The course is taught by experienced scholars and researchers from several academic disciplines. For each module there will be classroom lectures, plus one or more excursion(s) into the countryside with teachers as guides. It is incumbent upon the student to be prepared through reading in order to make the most of the excursions. The excursions will be compulsory and may include archaeological digs and remains, runestones, medieval churches (including the local cathedral), castles, 18th century factory town, etc. The excursions are designed to provide an in-depth picture of the period studied. The course includes searching for literature, reading, analyzing and reflecting on relevant literature and preparing the written papers. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Examination will be in the form of papers, one for each of the modules. Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |

Only general admission requirements: Completion of an upper secondary education and skills in English, both written and oral, corresponding to the level of English required in Swedish upper secondary education (eg. a TEOFL-score of at least 500 points for paper based test, 197 points for computer based test or 61 points for internet based test; IELTS with at least 5,0 overall and no part under 4,5, or equivalent) At least one semester of university studies and knowledge in English. For Swedish students, English B (passed) or equivalent is compulsory. International students who do not have English as their first language must document their proficiency in English by submitting results from an internationally recognised test, e.g. TOEFL test (Test of English as a Foreign Language). Scores required: TOEFL score: at least 213/550. IELTS: at least overall score 6.0. |

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus. The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed. |
