Religious Studies. The Old Testament in Translation, continuation course , 15 ECTS Credits

AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should, via translations of The Old Testament, be able to
- demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the contents of the Old Testament writings and their historical creation environment, as well as some of their theological central ideas,
- use advanced ability to profit by exegetical nonfiction, for example scientific comments, guides and monographs,
- demonstrate advanced ability to understand and interpret Old Testament texts in translation by means of exegetical aids.
CONTENTS
The course consists of two modules with the following parts:

Module 1: Old Testament Chronology and Theology (7.5 HE credits)
- study of Old Testament chronology and some fundamental features of Old Testament theology.

Module 2: Study of Old Testament texts (7.5 HE credits)
- text and commentary studies to certain parts of Genesis, Exodus, The Book of Psalms and from the prophet literature, as well as an introduction in the problems of the Bible translation.
TEACHING
The student's work mainly consists of independent text and commentary studies, and application of exegetical methods in the own interpretation assignments. The course also includes lectures, seminars, and supervision of a minor, written assignment.
EXAMINATION
The course is examined through compulsory seminars, oral or written examination, and through presentation of a smaller, written assignment.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

For admission to the course, at least 7.5 HE credits from Religious Studies are required - Biblical Studies, continuation course: the module the Old Testament, or the equivalent.
GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
