| AIM OF THE COURSE |
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- describe the language Romani chib, its history, dialects and present-day usage
- relate words and expressions in the Romani chib to the culture of Romani speakers
- analyse chosen texts in Romani chib
- present the importance of linguistic and cultural expressions in identity creating processes with special emphasis on the role of music
- present the importance of history and historiography for Romani culture. |
| CONTENTS |
The aim of the course is that the student should acquire knowledge of the language Romani chib and Roman culture. The course covers:
- The living language, knowing a language, spoken language, written language, language contact, contact language
- Linguistic description of Romani chib: morphology, phonetics, grammar
- Dialects/varieties of Romani chib.
- Material culture and the language
- Language in use: examples from Swedish Romani, Arli, Lovari, Kale, Kelderash.
- Cultural and linguistic expressions in identity creating processes on individual and group level
- Male and female in Romani chib and Roman culture
- The role of music in identity creating processes on individual and group level
- History and historiography of Romani chib and Roman culture. |
| TEACHING |
| The course takes the form of lectures and seminars that require active participation of the student. Student's participation requires studies of literature and preparations before discussions with another course participant. |
| EXAMINATION |
The course is examined continuously with written assignments and in the form of individual, independent project work with a specialisation that is decided in consultation with the course coordinator. The project work should be presented in oral and written form.
Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |

| A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course |
| CERTIFICATE |
| Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division. |

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.
