AIM OF THE COURSE
After the course the student shall:
- know what Nordic culture stands for and how to define what culture is.
- know how to describe what Nordic culture is, in relation to the content of the course. From the program in the course the student shall know how to make corporations between own culture and the visit as a student in Sweden.
- know and describe knowledge of both material and immaterial cultural heritage.
- know the main Swedish traditions, the high festivals and Swedes relation to nature.
- in general know and describe different cultural and geographical areas, as the city and the countryside.
CONTENTS
The main content of the course explores our Nordic cultural and geographical environments. The course give insights into Nordic cultural life, Culture known as the system of shared beliefs, values, customs, behaviours, and artefacts expressed in local identity, folk-art, craft, dance and music.
The course will also give the participants the possibility to take part in outdoor activities as part of their recreation and learning.

From these environments the following will be studied and explored:
Local identity, culture history, countryside life and citizenship.
Our cultural heritage, a material and immaterial culture. We explore outdoor education - a way of learning.
The right of public access and Swedes relation to nature.
Folkloristic tales and sagas, Music and traditional Swedish dances and songs, the traditions and the high festivals. The traditional cooking as a way of learning culture.
TEACHING
Lectures, seminars, residential (live-in seminairs) courses, Experiential learning through experience and workshops. Self studies and group works.

EXAMINATION
Students will be required to give a written documentation of culture and a comparative study of their native country culture and their experiences with the Nordic Culture seminars. Written personal final report is a part of final examination.
Nordic culture includes two-attendance compulsory live- in seminaries in different parts of cultural environments. After seminars personal reports should be presented. Group presentations should be supported by (documentation form both outside and within the resources available through the) IT.



Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Documented knowledge of English equivalent to “Engelska B” is required, or an international proficiency test, e.g. TOEFL, minimum score 550/213.At least one year of full-time undergraduate studies.

The course is graded according to the ECTS grading scale A-F

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
