AIM OF THE COURSE
After completion of the course the student shall at an advanced level be able to:
- account for, and critically reflect over, the contemporary and historical development of EU migration and asylum policy
- account for, and critically reflect ove the interlinkages and conflicts between the various areas that go to make up EU migration and asylum policy
- demonstrate analytical skills informed by theoretical and conceptual tools relevant to research on EU migration and asylum policy.
CONTENTS
The course deals with migration and asylum policy in the European Union, incorporating both contemporary developments and their historical antecedents. Students are acquainted with major scholarly accounts in the field and develop their analytical skills taking into consideration key theoretical and conceptual tools. The course places particular importance on the interplay between various areas of EU migration policy, including labour migration, irregular migration, border security and migrant integration policy. Students also familiarize with the crucial connections and conflicts between the different levels of migration and asylum governance in the EU.
TEACHING
The coruse offers a combination of lectures, seminars, and individual assignments. Students are expected to be well prepared for lectures and to have completed assigned preparations for seminars. Language of instruction: English
EXAMINATION
The course is examined throughactive seminar participation and written assignments. Detailed information about the examination can be found in the course’s study guide.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

A bachelor’s degree in the humanities, fine arts, social sciences, behavioural sciences, health sciences or natural sciences or equivalent qualifications.
Documented knowledge of English equivalent to Engelska B/Engelska 6.
GRADING
The course is graded according to the ECTS grading scale A-F
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
