AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should be able to
- account for some basics features of the emergence of modern society,
- formulate problems in connection with theoretical perspectives of relevance for the subject,
- use different humanistic and social sciences methods,
- reflect on the own writing and demonstrate knowledge of how scientific texts are produced,
- critically reflect on and discuss ethical issues and other value issues,
- formulate own values and how these relate to contemporary social and cultural values.
CONTENTS
The course highlights the conditions of social and cultural values. The course also highlights contemporary societies and their diversity with a focus on social and cultural values in separate social practices, such as family-relatives-household and leisure-education-work. The emphasis is on the diversity of everyday life in welfare societies. On the basis of the students' choice, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality and age are problematised. Within the scope of the course, the students orient themselves in basic text, value and argument analysis approaches to contemporary social and cultural manifestations.
TEACHING
The teaching is based on student active working methods. Accordingly, the teaching takes the form of, for example, lectures, individual and group exercises, as well as through supervision.
EXAMINATION
The examinations are normally both in oral and written form. Oral examination comprises oral presentations of group examination assignments and participation in the discussion of the assignments. Written examination comprises an individual assignment and group work. The course is examined in several parts. A passing grade in all these parts is required to pass. All forms of instruction other than lectures are compulsory.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.

and the specific entry requirements that apply for admission to the Bachelor's Programme in Social and Cultural Analysis.
GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
