| AIM OF THE COURSE |
Having completed the course the student will be able to
- Integrate media production work with the history of Utopia and the Idea of Progress in the Western World,
- Produce media representations on themes presented in the course,
- Relate and debate utopian thought in the Western world since ancient times to our present time through the making of a media production,
- Interpret and evaluate utopian thought and the Idea of Progress and relate them to contemporary political visions,
- Understand and relate the transformation of Utopia into Dystopia through the different political, scientific, economical and cultural contexts during the 20th Century.

| CONTENTS |
| The course is a laboratory course integrating media production work with historical and theoretical perspectives on utopian thinking and the Idea of progress. At a practical level, students will learn skills in various media forms, including exhibition, video production and hyper media. Aiming to blend theory and practice, students will learn to visualise and analyze the themes presented in the course through a media production (exhibition, video production or hyper media). |
| TEACHING |
| The course is based on student active, process oriented group work that consists of A: media workshops, lectures and seminars on media production, B: readings, lectures and seminars focusing on topics as the History of Utopia, Utopia and the Idea of Progress, The Dystopian Imagination, Feminist Utopias and Cyberspace and Genetic Fantasies. The students are required to make an exhibition, or a video production, or a hyper media production related to the subject of Utopia and the Idea of progress. The students are also required to write one course paper, reflecting on their media production and representations of Utopia and the Idea of Progress. |
| EXAMINATION |
The students will make a video production, hyper media production or exhibition related to the subject of Utopia and the Idea of progress. The students will write one course paper reflecting on their media production an representations of Utopia and the Idea of Progress.
Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |
| ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS |
Documented knowledge of English equivalent to "Engelska B", or an
international proficiency test, e.g. TOEFL, mininum score 550/213. At
least 40 points (one year of study) either in one of the areas Culture
Studies, Social Science, Media Studies, Media Technology, Film and Video Production, or Art School. |
