AIM OF THE COURSE
The general aim of the course is that the students should gain an increased understanding of epidemiological concepts and methods.

After the course, the students shall be able to
- consider essential components in the planning of an epidemiological study,
- use some basic statistical techniques for analysing epidemiological data,
- evaluate the results from epidemiological studies using scientific methods and reasoning,
- understand the implications of epidemiological results for developing and evaluating preventive procedures.
CONTENTS
The course content covers:

- Concepts in epidemiology,
- Study designs,
- Methods for causal analysis of observational data,
- Experimental epidemiology,
- Project work including the planning of an epidemiological study and/or the analyses of epidemiological data sets.

Some of the seminars will be devoted to critical analysis of published studies.
TEACHING
The course consists of lectures, seminars and project works. The course can also be an individual literature course with a written assignment upon decision by the examiner.
Language of instruction: English.
EXAMINATION
A written individual examination combined with participation in seminars.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must, by the closing date for application, hold a bachelor's degree/kandidatexamen (equivalent for example a professional degree) of at least 180 ECTS credits, including a 15 ECTS credit degree paper or equivalent.
All applicants must fulfil the specific entrance requirements of in-depth studies for at least one-year in fields relevant for the programme such as anthropology, sociology, history, philosophy, epidemiology, ethics, public health science, etc.
Documented knowledge of English equivalent to "Engelska B"; i.e. English as native language or an internationally recognized test, e.g. TOEFL (minimum scores: Paper based 575 + TWE-score 4.5, and internet based 90), IELTS, academic (minimum score: Overall band 6.5 and no band under 5.5), or equivalent.

Students within the third semester of the Master of Arts and Science in Health and Society and the PHOENIXEM Master Dynamics of Health and Welfare. A basic understanding of statistics is required for successful accomplishment of the course.
GRADING
The course is graded according to the ECTS grading scale A-F
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
