AIM OF THE COURSE

- discuss and analyse the various meanings and values related to children and the media in specific cultural and historical contexts,
- explain different forms of ownership and media production, i.e. public service/commercial/education, and their implementation on media reception,
- identify and analyse media production in relation to cultural policy making at national and local levels,
- by means of theoretical and methodological tools, describe and analyse media and relate the analyses to children’s and young peoples own media use.
CONTENTS
The course consists of two parts. The first part will take a starting point in historical understandings of media and media use. Cultural policy making at local and national levels will be related to media policies in different media (film, radio, television, internet). Earlier research on media will be used in order to reflect upon the relationship between societal values, science and understandings of children and childhood. In contemporary society intersections between media use in educational contexts and in people’s homes will be discussed. The course will also address the relationship between societal notions of children and young people and children’s own media strategies.

In the second part of the course students will deepen their theoretical and empirical understanding of gender, ethnicity, class, identity and age in media productions. Students will conduct an in-depth analysis of films, television programmes or other forms of media content.
TEACHING
The instruction methods will include lectures for overviews of the readings combined with teacher lead seminars and discussion forums on the Internet as well as individual comments on written assignments. Guiding students in searching relevant literature is also part of the instruction methods of this course. The Internet based format of the course requires a high degree of self-activity from students. Students will be expected to take an active part in their learning experience and to be able to work independently as well as in pairs or groups with other students.
Language of instruction: English.
EXAMINATION
Each course block is concluded with a compulsory assignment. Each of these assignments must be completed and submitted before students can receive their credits for the course. The assignment forms of this course include written essays, reviews of literature, oppositions of the work of other students and considerations of particular course related questions in a discussion forum. As a final examination, students will be required to write a longer essay using discourse analysis on a particular media material.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
