CONTENTS
Current Theoretical Discourse in Sociology, 7.5 HE credits (Aktuell teoridiskussion)
This module covers current specialisations in contemporary sociological theory. The students should independently relate these to one another and to empirical research results. The module gives an opportunity for deeper theoretical problematising of a field of research and theory that is relevant to the thesis work.

Advanced Research Methods, 7.5 HE credits (Sociologisk metod)
The students should deepen their methodological knowledge within a field of relevance for their own thesis work. The choice of method is analysed from a science theory perspective, with an emphasis on the role that methods have in the research process. In this course, method problems and proposals for solutions are presented with examples from contemporary sociological research.

Thesis, 15 HE credits (Uppsats)
In the main part of the course, the students carry out a study, based on a chosen problem area, where sociological theory and empirical data are used in an independent way. The personal critical reflection is in focus. The essay should satisfy the theoretical, methodological and disposition requirements that are set for second-cycle studies.
TEACHING
The teaching takes the form of lectures, supervision, independent group work on both assigned and individually formulated discussion issues that result in written bases that are presented for joint discussion at the compulsory seminars. The students should also independently collect data or with a critical approach use secondary data and complete a written assignment based on this data, relevant sociological literature and current research reports.
EXAMINATION
The course is examined through active participation in the compulsory seminars, and presentation and discussion of essays that should demonstrate the theory and method knowledge acquired in the course. The essay is presented and defended at a seminar and the student should publicly discuss other essay and participate actively at least two additional essay seminars. Detailed information can be found in the study guide.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
