AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should:

- have a broad and advanced knowledge of cultural geographic theory and the development of ideas in the subject

- have advanced skills in cultural geographic method

- have the ability to evaluate and review scientific statements critically

- independently be able to structure and carry out a scholarly study and be able to then collect, analyse and present a larger material and present the work in an essay

- have acquired advanced knowledge about and skills in implementations of cultural geographic theories and methods, illustrated with questions regarding risk, vulnerability and sustainable development in the community planning.
CONTENTS
Theory and Method 7.5 HE credits

General and geographic theory of knowledge and geographic history of science. Methods and models for analysis of spatial data and spatial structures. Regions as scientific study objects. Regional and global development processes. Interregional relationships and dependencies.

Risk, Vulnerability and Sustainable Development in Community Planning 7.5 HE credits

The specialisation concerns issues about risk, vulnerability and sustainability in community planning. Various types of risks - natural, human created, immanent, external, etcetera - are covered, as well as how man perceives, relates to and communicates risks. Different ways of defining, analysing and calculating risk and vulnerability is reviewed, as well as life-cycle analyses and environmental impact assessments from different risk and vulnerability perspectives. The course gives a basic orientation of public authorities and laws regarding use of natural resources, physical community planning and handling of environmental issues. Vulnerability and preparedness on different levels of society are also highlighted, with a special emphasis on local development strategies, municipal preparedness planning and the local community as an arena for planning measures.

Essay 15 HE credits

A larger independent scholarly work based on cultural geographic issues, theories and methods. The results are presented in an essay that is covered in a seminar.
TEACHING
The teaching takes the form of lectures, seminars, exercises, supervision and field trips.

All seminars and exercises are compulsory. The examiner may grant exemption from compulsory parts if there are special reasons. The students should actively and at their own responsibility profit by the contents of the reading list, accomplish all practical assignments and participate actively in seminars. On the basis of individual supervision, the student should accomplish a larger independent written work (essay). The student should defend the work and critically review another student's work at an essay seminar.
EXAMINATION
The course is examined continuously through the following examination forms: take-home examination, essay seminar and participation in compulsory parts and carrying out related assignments.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Passing grade in Human and Social Geography, basic course and at least 22.5 HE credits approved, including a degree project comprising 7.5 HE credits, in Human and Social Geography, continuation course. (or the equivalent).
GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
