| AIM OF THE COURSE |
On completion of the course, students should on an advanced level be able to:
- describe and critically review theories and problems within the field of environmental, animal and biomedical ethics,
- analyse in depth problems in environmental, animal and biomedical ethics,
- make well-considered arguments for a standpoint of their own regarding a few issues in environmental, animal and biomedical ethics,
- demonstrate an open and critical attitude to positions and arguments in environmental, animal and biomedical ethics. |
| CONTENTS |
| This course gives an overview of bioethics in a broad sense, that is, the study of ethical issues raised by the life sciences and health care. It presents different views on environmental issues like sustainability and climate change, and different standpoints on using animals for food and scientific experimentation. It also focuses on issues in biomedical ethics such as genetic testing and end-of-life decisions. Cases as well as theoretical arguments are discussed. |
| TEACHING |
| In the course students read and analyse texts, participate in group work, write papers and are actively involved in seminar discussions. In addition, lectures are offered. Work with web resources and visits at workplaces outside the university may also be provided. Langage of instruction: English. |
| EXAMINATION |
Active participation in seminar discussion is expected of the students. The course is examined by writing a paper. Detailed information about the examination can be found in the course’s study guide
Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |
| ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS |
A bachelor's degree/kandidatexamen of at least 180 ECTS credits, including a 15 ECTS credit degree paper or equivalent.
Documented knowledge of English equivalent to Engelska B/Engelska 6: internationally recognized test, e.g. TOEFL (minimum scores: Paper based 575 + TWE-score 4.5, and internet based 90), IELTS, academic (minimum score Overall band 6.5 and no band under 5.5), or equivalent. |
| GRADING |
| The course is graded according to the ECTS grading scale A-F |
| CERTIFICATE |
| Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division. |
