AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should be able to
- use knowledge of the manifestations and roles of religions in history and the present,
- account for how religions and other life philosophies may interpret and address human existential matters,
- account for how different religions may interpret and relate to religious pluralism,
- use knowledge of how own and others' traditions are taught,
- demonstrate knowledge of conceptions of the world and existential matters in the world of the Bible
- demonstrate familiarity with how existential matters have been interpreted and addressed in the history of the Christian church,
- use theoretical tools to analyse life philosophies and current ethical problems,
- demonstrate an understanding of different conditions for communication of existential matters and the will to develop the ability for nuanced communication in such communication,
- apply and analyse some different models of interpretation of expression for religions and life philosophies,
- analyse ethical and life philosophy-related argumentation and discover, understand and critically assess underlying assumptions.
CONTENTS
The course consists of four modules:

Religion and Pluralism, 7.5 HE credits
Highlight how some religions may shape the daily lives of people; questions of how youth are introduced to the own religious tradition and the views they will have of the own and others' religions; how religions react to pluralism and modernity, and how people may understand one another across the religious borders.

Ethics and Philosophy of Life, 7.5 HE credits
A selection of ethical problems from the current debate; material from different religious traditions and philosophies of life, with specific focus on questions of views of man and social attitudes; the relation between ethical theory and applied ethics.

Conceptions of the World and Existential Matters in the World of the Bible, 7.5 HE credits
Conceptions of the world and views of man in the world of the Bible; examples of different ways to interpret and handle existential matters in the Old Testament and in the New Testament; introduction to the creation and contents of biblical writings; issues of text interpretation.

Existential Matters and Cultivating Traditions in the History of the Christian Church, 7.5 HE credits
Work with different ways to interpret and process existential matters in the history of the Christian church, not least how the Bible and expressions of Christian traditions are interpreted in this work; questions of ecclesiastical tradition and personal faith. The module constitutes an introduction to church history.
TEACHING
The teaching takes the form of lectures and seminars, but other types of teaching/working methods may also occur, such as film screenings and study visits. The course includes group assignments and independent assignments, where the student exercises analysis and processing of subject matter from different sources, including fiction and film, as well as in oral and written presentation. The student's work mainly consists of independent literature studies.
Portfolio is a consistently compulsory working method that is integrated in each course for students at the bachelor's programme.
EXAMINATION
The examination consists of seminar assignments, and a written examination and/or written assignments. The seminars are compulsory and in all cases imply work that should be carried out in advance.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.

GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
