Aim:
The course will give an orientation on basic electromagnetism, geometrical optics, and atomic, molecular and nuclear physics.

Course organization:
Teaching will be provided in the form of lectures and laborative exercises.

Course content:
Electrostatics; electric field, electric potential, electric capacity, electric dipole, polarisation, dielectric materials. dc current; current density, mobility, drift velocity, electrical resistance. Magnetostatics: magnetic flux, Bio-Savart formula, Ampere's law, magnetic dipoles, magnetisation, magnetic materials, magnetic circuits. Time varying electromagnetic fields: induction, electromotive force, Faraday's law, inductance, electromagnetic waves in vacuum and in the interface between dielectric materials, Snell's law, polarised light. Optics; superposition of electromagnetic waves, interference, diffraction, optical activity, geometrical optics. Atomic physics: Schrödinger equation, one-electron systems, quantum numbers, energy levels, atomic spectra, multi-electron atoms, Pauli principle, the periodic table of elements, lasers. Molecular physics; molecular orbitals, covalent binding, ionic binding, vibrational and rotational levels. Nuclear physics; the structure of the atomic nucleus, models of the nucleus, ionising radiation, fission, fusion, units of radiology.
