Aim: The course gives an introduction to modern physics. The course repeatedly demonstrates how wide areas of modern physics - the physics developed during this century - can be understood trough a clear understanding of a few basic concepts and principles. Course content: The laboratory work concerns atomic physics. The course starts with a description of the classical physics background i e a presentation of the problems that made the creation of a new theory necessary. This also gives an opportunity to point out the bridges between classical and modern physics. The classical physics topics are: The principle of linear momentum conservation and its connection to the equivalence between mass and energy. The concepts of drift and diffusion. Thermodynamics presented from the statistical physics point of view - thermodynamically correct definitions of entropy, temperature, chemical potential and pressure. The modern physics topics are: A historical perspective on quantum physics. A philosophical perspective on quantum physics. Planck's description of the black body radiation and its connection to the green house effect. Simple solutions to the Schrödinger equation illustrating energy quantisation, tunneling, quantum mechanical operators and expectation values. The connection between Schrödinger's equation and the periodic table. Fermi-Dirac statistics illustrating the free electron model. Energy bands and the p-n junction Bose-Einstein statistics illustrating the black body radiation. Radioactivity - origin, risks, units.
