Aim:
The course shall give knowledge about management aspects of organization theory, organizational behaviour, and organizational change, particularly regarding industrial manufacturing. It will also develop an understanding of research methods used in studies of organizations. The students shall also develop the ability to write and present a report.

Course organization:
The course follows the principles of problem based learning, whereby the student is expected to take responsibility of his/her own learning. A series of lectures presents the theoretical foundations together with different practical perspectives. The theory is further developed in seminars. The seminars are based on the students' own active participation in discussions regarding theory or different case studies. The students are also expected to present different parts of the literature in seminars. Based on a company visit the students have to write a report, which will be presented and commented, at the last seminar.

Course content:
Organization theory: The development of organization theory, division of labour, administrative theory, bureaucratic theory, scientific management, human relations movement, decision theory, contingency theory. Organization structure: dimensions of structure, impact on organization structure by environment, size, age, and technology. Organizational culture, managerial and organizational cognition, group dynamics. Organizational processes, leadership theory, strategic processes and organizational change. Manufacturing organization: The sociotechnical systems perspective, production lay-out, process oriented organization, work group organization, leadership of production organizations, the role of the union, wage systems. Change of manufacturing organizations. Research methods. Exercises in oral and written communication.
