Aim:
The aim of this course is to present the use of information technology for efficient information handling within the health care organisation with special emphasis on computer-based patient record systems, and infrastructure for data communication between different levels of health care. Other important aspects dealt with are security and privacy issues. A main goal of the course is to develop the ability to critically judge requirements and demands on medical information systems.

Prerequisites:
TBME02 Anatomy and Physiology or BME50 Biomedical Engineering

Course content:
Information retrieval, medical information sources, literature databases, search systems. Medical data and structured medical terminology. Computer-based patient records (CPR), laboratory information systems, ward information systems. Medical terminology services, nomenclatures and classifications Infrastructure for medical data communication. Security and privacy issues. Laboratory experiment: information retrieval, database access, computer-based patient records.
