NKEA23 | General Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry
Organisk kemi 1, 2,5p. Biokemi 1, 2,5p., 5 ECTS-points /Allmän organisk kemi och Biokemi/ Advancement level: A
Aim: The course gives fundamental knowledge in the following areas: - Organic chemical nomenclature. Functional groups in organic chemistry. - Laboratory techniques in organic chemistry. - Structure and function of biomolecules. Metabolism in living cells. Molecular genetics. - Separation and analytical techniques in biochemistry. Prerequisites: Admitted to the profile in the Physics programme : Physics with bioapplication. Course organization: The course is devided in two separate parts: organic chemistry (2.5 p) and biochemistry (2.5 p). The theoretical part consists mainly of lectures. The lessons in organic chemistry include problem solving. The experimental part gives examples of common laboratory methods correlated to the theory. Course content: Organic chemistry: Nomenclature, structure, reactions and chemical and physical properties for the different functional groups. The experimental part consists of simpler synthesis and common purification methods. Biochemistry: Structure and function of amino acids and proteins. Enzymology. Catabolism and anabolism of carbohydrates, lipides, proteins and nucleic acids. The experimental part includes thin-layer chromatography, gel filtration, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, photometry, enzyme kinetics, oxygen consumption. Course literature: Organic chemistry: Compendium and Lab.instructions from the department. Biochemistry: Campbell: Biology. Lab.instructions from the department
