Aim:
To give an introduction to materials that are currently used in biomedical applications, to problems related to foreign body reactions (e.g. rejection) and integration between artificial surfaces and living tissues.

Prerequisites:
Participation in NFYC62 Biophysics, NKEA23 General Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry or equivalent.

Course organization:
The course consists of lectures, seminars, project/laboratory work guided by a tutor.

Course content:
Classification of materials and their applications, human physiology, the immune system (briefly), protein structure and function, protein adsorption, the coagulation- and complement systems, biological processes at interfaces, surface modification and analysis, biological assaying, wound healing, and clinical correlations.
