NFYC75 Sensor Technology, 5 ECTS-points
/SENSORTEKNOLOGI/

Advancement level:
C

Aim:
The course will give an overview of chemical sensor technology including biosensors, both sensors used in industry in electronic noses and sensor still in the research laboratory. The principles of different chemical sensors, with emphasis on gas sensors will be given. The special issues of biosensors are described. The course also gives a short introduction to the processing of sensors, including micromachining. The course contains two laboratory exercises.

Prerequisites:
The course can be taken in the Physics programme, year 3 or 4. The basic physics courses in the Physics programme are required.

Course organization:
The course is given as a mix of lectures and supervised self studies and two full day laboratory exercises.

Course content:
Sensor technology: Sensor principles of chemical sensors and biosensors. Process technology and micromachining. Important biosensor principles: immobilisation of enzymes, antigen - antibody reactions. Laboratory exercises: Antibody - antigen investigation on a Biacore system. Processing and testing of a PdMOS hydrogen sensor, demonstration of different sensors and electronic noses.

Course literature:
Review papers and book chapters are distributed during the course. Individual search of sensor papers in data bases.

INL1Hand in assignments: Different sensor principles should be described in general, for a hydrogen sensor and for a biosensor. Some process steps should be described. Final essay concerning an individually chosen measurement problem. The sensor technologies dealt with during the course shuld be discussed according to usefulness in this measurement situation. (4p)
