NFYC62 Biophysics, 5 ECTS-points
/BIOFYSIK/

Advancement level:
C

Aim:
The course should give basic knowledge in the structure and function of biomolecules. Experimental methods suitable for studies of molecular structure and dynamics are discussed.

Prerequisites:
Quantum mechanics. No previous knowledge in biology or biochemistry is required.

Course organization:
The course is organised in lectures and laboratory work.

Course content:
Bonding in biological molecules: covalent bonding, ionic bonding, hydrogen bonding, van der Waal forces, hydrophobic interaction. Functional groups in biological molecules. Classes of biological molecules: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleotides. Structure of nucleic acids. Functional groups in biological molecules. Threedimensional structure of proteins. Protein folding. Enzyme kinetics. Membranes. Nerves and nerve membranes, Spectroscopic methods in the field of biophysics: optical absorbtion, magnetic resonance, Spectroscopic studies of protein structure and dynamics.
