NFYB43 Atomic and Nuclear Physics, 5 ECTS-points
/ATOM- OCH KÄRNFYSIK/

Advancement level:
B

Aim:
The course contains some basic concepts of modern physics, developed in the 20th century. After the course, the student should be able to perform some simple calculations and experiments within the subject and be able to read about both important applications and further developments of theory.

Prerequisites:
Attented NFYA 31 Mechanics, NFYA 32 Electromagnetic Fields and NFYA 33 Electromagnetism and Waves.

Course organization:
Lectures, Physical seminars (see NFYA 45) and laboratory lessons.

Course content:
The duality of electromagnetic radiation and the wave nature of matter. The Bohr model of the hydrogen atom. Orientation about quantum mechanics. The construction of the atoms and the periodic system. Optical and X-ray spectra. The construction of the atomic nuclei. Radioactive decay. The interaction between radiation and matter (including biological effects). Nuclear reactions and instruments for nuclear physics. Nuclear power plants. Elementary particles and cosmic radiation.
