Aim: In theory and practice acquire basic knowledge and skills in genetics as well as statistical methods for use in biology.Prerequisites: General Chemistry 1, 2 and 3 (NKEA 11, 12 and 13 or NKEA 14, 15, 16 and 17).Course organization: Lectures, laboratory work, group work, calculation exercices and seminars.Course content: Genetic principles. Mechanisms for mitosis- and meiosis- cell and life cycles. Molecular basis of heredity. The structure and function of chromosomes. Recombination. Populations as genetic systems. Prokaryot genetics including mechanisms for exchange of genetic material, mobile genetic elements as well as plasmid biology.
