Aim: The aim of the course is to give an introduction to and an overwiev of modern physics, especially statistical physics, quantum mechanics and solid state physics. Prerequisites: TNG010 Multivariable calculus, TNG012 Physical modelling, TNE038 Electromagnetism Course organization: Lectures, tutorials and laboratory work.Course content: Statistical physics:entropy, Boltzmann factor, partition function, Maxwell-Boltzmann and Fermi-Dirac distributions, black-body radiation. Quantum mechanics: interaction between electromagnetic radiation and matter, wave-particle dualism, the uncertainty principle. The Schrödinger equation with applications on simple systems. The Pauli principle, molecules and molecular bonds. Solid state physics: Crystal structures, lattices, electrical conductivity of semiconductors, band theory.Course literature: To be announced | ||
