TFKE30 | Analytical Chemistry, 6 ECTS-points /Analytisk kemi/ Advancement level: C | |
Aim: The aim of the course is to give fundamental knowledge about modern instrumental analytical techniques and to show how these methods can be used for the identification and quantification of elements and compounds in complex samples. Prerequisites: Attended TFKE 01 General Chemistry, TFKE 05 Physical Chemistry, TFKE 10 Inorganic Chemistry, TFKE 15 Organic Chemistry. Course organization: The course consists of lectures, laborations and seminars. Course content: Theory of chromatographic separation. Gas chromatography (GC) including sample injection, separation and detection. High performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) methods such as normal phase and reverse phase HPLC, size-exclusion chromatography, ion chromatography and capillary electrophoresis. Mass spectrometry (MS), manual and computer-based interpretation of mass spectra, GC-MS and HPLC-MS. Molecular ultraviolet/visible absorption spectroscopy and molecular fluorescence. Atomic spectroscopy based upon flame and electrothermal atomization, emission spectroscopy based on plasma sources (ICP, ICP-MS). Inorganic and organic trace analysis including sample preparation and enrichment techniques. Course literature: D.C. Harris: Quantitative Chemical Analysis. W.H. Freeman and Company.
