TFKE05 | Physical Chemistry, 6 ECTS-points /Fysikalisk kemi/ Advancement level: B
Aim: The course is intended to give the student a good orientation in basic physical chemistry - the theory as well as the laboratory work - thus giving him/her a fundamental base for further studies in chemistry and biology. The aim of the laborations is to shed light on the theory and to give the student skills in the laboratory technology of physical chemistry. Prerequisites: Attended TFKE01 General chemistry. Supplementary courses: TFKE10 Inorganic Chemistry, TFKE15 Organic Chemistry, TFKE25 Biochemistry, TFKE 30 Analytical chemistry. Course organization: Lectures and laborations dominates. A few lessons with problemsolving from certain parts of the theory are included. Course content: Lectures and lessons: van der Waals gases. Intermolecular forces. Chemical thermodynamics; first, second and third laws, enthalpy and thermochemistry, entropy and spontaneous reactions, Gibbs free energy. Solids, liquids and solutions; colligative properties. Phase equilibria. Changes of the equilibrium situation by extern variables. Electrochemistry; galvanic cells and electrolysis, connections to thermodynamics. Chemical kinetics; rate laws and mechanisms. Laborations: Thermochemistry, Chemical equilibrium, Phase equilibria, Kinetics and Electrochemistry. Course literature: Atkins, P.W., Physical Chemistry, Oxford University Press, chosen parts.
