TFKE02 General Chemistry, 4,5 ECTS-points
/Allmän kemi/

Advancement level:
B

Aim:
The aim of the course is to give fundamental knowledge in the following areas: the composition of matter, chemical reactions, reaction stoichiometry, chemical equilibrium, atomic structure and the periodic table, the chemical bond, and the structures of molecules. Thereby, the course gives a basis for further studies in chemistry and biology.

Supplementary courses:
TFKE05 Physical Chemistry, TFKE10 Inorganic Chemistry, TFKE15 Organic Chemistry, TFKE25 Biocemistry, TFKE30 Analytical Chemistry

Course organization:
The course consists of lectures, lessons and laborations. The lessons are used for exercises connected to the theory presented during the lectures.

Course content:
Theory: The properties of substances. Measurements. Elements and compounds. The mole. Precipitation, acid-base and redox reactions. Balancing reactions. The stoichiometry of reactions. Chemical equilibrium in particular acid-base equilibria. Light and spectroscopy. The structure of atoms, atomic orbitals and the periodic table of the elements. Ionic and covalent bonds. Molecules: Lewis structures, the shapes of molecules, charge distribution, hybridization, molecular orbital theory. Laborations: Quantitative chemical analysis based on titrations, spectrophotometry and atomic spectroscopy.
