Aim:
The aim of the course is to give a physical understanding of phase transformations based on a thermodynamical description that can be applied in metallurgy, materials science or construction materials engineering.

Prerequisites:
TFFY70 Physics of Condensed Matter part I TFFY25 Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics.

Course content:
Crystal phases, defects in crystals incl. vacancies and dislocations. Solutions and alloys. Atomic processes: diffusion and creep. Multiphase materials: thermodynamics, phase equilibrium, metastability, phase transformations, and precipitation. Mechanical properties of metals: elasticity, plasticity and fracture. Steel. Structure - property - synthesis relationships.
