TDDB35 Geographic Information Systems, 6 ECTS-points
/Geografiska informationssystem/

Advancement level:
C

Aim:
The course will give a basic introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with data capture, preparation, analysis and presentation of spatial data. Further is the goal to provide an understanding for the specific needs that is put on databases and representation of geographical data as well as the flow of data and information in a GIS. A case (Problem Based Learning) will be presented to obtain skills in specification, design and implementation of a GIS. The course wants to give the students a widened perspective on GIS where technology, organisation and application are interacting.

Prerequisites:
Databasteknik for example TDDB48

Course organization:
The course consists of lectures, practical exercises, tutorials and seminars. Further, the students have the opportunity to do a case study with a written report, individually or in a smaller group with the assistance from the teachers.

Course content:
Introduction to GIS and the scientific fields that contribute to the research area. Data capture in GIS with an overview of different ways to collect and manipulate geographic information and attribute data. Representation in GIS with different ways to store, code and visualise geo data. Databases for GIS and the specific needs when storing and retrieving geo data.Data -and sensor fusion in GIS Data fusion when combining several databases representing spatial information by using geo coding, address match or geographical match. Analysis of geo data can be made in the databases or directly in the geographical representation. Applications of methods like cluster analysis, cartographic algebra and Boolean algebra in GIS. Models in GIS include both spatial and temporal properties and are depending on the tasks that force the development. Possibilities and problems when coupling mathematical models as formulated in e.g. Simulink and GIS. Visualisation and presentation with maps as to improve interdisciplinary communication with complex data. Administration of GIS-projects. Investments in GIS can be awarding but there are both administrative and technical problems.
