Aim:
The aim of the course is to teach the principles of formal knowledge representation in several application areas in AI. In particular, the student will learn how to use logic, both as a tool for analysis and as a knowledge representation language, for reasoning about action and change.

Course organization:
The seminars and lectures cover both theory and exercises of a more practical nature.

Course content:
The course is organized into two parts. In part I, we consider knowledge representation in general, and logic-based approaches in particular. We introduce a number of logical tools and concepts required for reasoning about the domain of action and change. The general tools of nonmonotonic logic and temporal logic in AI are introduced and applied to three central problems in the action and change domain: the frame, qualification and ramification problems. All three are still considered open problems, but there are a number of proposed partial solutions that will also be studied. In part II, we introduce a systematic approach for studying the knowledge representation of dynamical systems. It can be used as a tool for analyzing much of the work considered in part I, and also as a tool for constructing new logics for reasoning about action and change. In addition, a technique for assessing the correctness of logics relative to formal definitions of "inhabited dynamic systems", which specify properties of agents and the environments they inhabit, will also be considered.
