Aim:
The course provides knowledge of technologies used in the operating theatre and the intensive care unit to assist and monitor vital body functions. The course also provides knowledge about the special senses and aids for the handicapped such as hearing aids and glasses. A presentation and discussion of ethical issues forms an integral part of the course as well as a problem-based project work.

Course content:
Intensive care: intensive care monitoring, anaesthesiology, respirators, fluid-, electrolyte- and drug administration, criteria's of death, ethical issues in intensive care Surgery: the operating theatre, surgical techniques, plastic surgery, transplantations, heart-lung machines, artificial heart assist pumps Hearing, vision, equilibrium: physiology of hearing, vision and equilibrium, hearing aids, audiology, ophthalmology, ERG, diagnostic methods Laboratory experiment: technical audiology (4h), the ventilator (4h), heart-lung assistance (4h) Project work (20h)
