Aim:
The aim of this course is to provide basic knowledge about computer networks and data communication with applications to health care with specific reference to message handling including text, images, signals and sound. Methods and tools for communication of multimedia objects will be explored and utilised with high demands for security and privacy as a basic prerequisite.

Prerequisites:
TBME02 Anatomy and Physiology or BME50 Biomedical Engineering

Course organization:
Lectures and seminars (26h), laboratory experiment och project work (36h).

Course content:
Information flow within the health care system. Basics of data communication and computer networks. Message handling, X.400, X.500. Coding systems with the health care sector. Methods for electronic data interchange (EDI) with respect to text, signals, images, sound, video. Internet-based techniques. Qualitative aspects on data compression techniques for multimedia. Standardisation work within CEN TC 251. Applications of telemedicine and virtual reality.
