TSIT10 Telecommunication Theory, ECTS-points
/TELEKOMMUNIKATIONSTEORI/

Advancement level:
D

Aim:
After completing the course, the students should have fundamental knowledge regarding methods and theoretical performance limits for telecommunication. They should be familiar with common theoretical telecommunication problems and be able to formulate relevant problems themselves. The main part of the course is devoted to channel coding, which means methods för effective communication on noisy channels, but other aspects of communication systems are highlighted as well. After the course, the students should be able to theoretically construct effective channel coding systems for given situations.

Prerequisites:
Linear algebra and abstract algebra, linear systems, probability theory and stochastic processes. Some knowledge about digital communication.

Course organization:
The course consists of lectures, seminars, computer laboratory work, supervised group discussions, and written homework assignments.

Course content:
The structure of a communication system: channel coding, encryption and other security methods, data compression, and data administration. Fundamental channel coding concepts: continous and discrete channel models, transmitter and receiver, performance measures such as error probability, information rate and transmitter power, and the relation between these. Receiver theory: optimal and suboptimal decoding, error probability estimates. Information theory: information measures (entropy and mutual information), channel capacity, optimal channel coding and the channel coding theorem, multiuser communication. Methods for channel coding: finite fields, linear codes, Reed-Solomon- and BCH-codes, convolutional codes, coded modulation, concatenated codes, and turbo codes. Algorithms for coding and decoding of these codes and their complexity. Methods for multiuser communication. Design of coding systems for given situations.

Course literature:
With PBL there is no traditional course litterature. Instead the student has to find the literature that fits his or her purpose. List of available literature will be distributed. The supervisors give advice if you want to buy books.

Assessment:
UPG1Witten homework assignments and an oral exam.

Course language is Swedish.
