Aim:
To acquire knowledge of the essential features of the historical, cultural and philosophical developments in Europe, which are of fundamental importance for an understanding Europe of today.

Course organization:
The course is based on a series of lectures.

Course content:
a) The principle lines of history This section is in two parts. The first part aims - from the European and Swedish historical development - at affording the student a chronological framework based mainly on changes of the political map. Here one underlines the long-term forms of political-historical and economical-historical connections. The second part consists of a series of thematicly concentrated lectures, aimed at complementing the framework view of European and Swedish history as given above. Such thematic lectures can include e.g. the Nordic agrarian society, the European towns/cities, the struggle for political power in Sweden or the history of Nordic technology. b) Survey of the history of philosophy This part of the course aims at affording the student a short orientation of the fundamental features of the Western history of philosophy. Views on mankind, nature and science are especially emphasized.
