TFFY68 Introductory Physics, ECTS-points
/KLASSISK FYSIK M/

Advancement level:
B

Aim:
The course is an introduction to thermodynamics and wave theory. Basic concepts of the thermodynamics and wave theory will be presented as well as some basic applications related to the subject. Experimental techniques will be used to study wave phenomena. Experimental problem solving including problem formulation, dimensional analysis and error calculation is also included in the course.

Supplementary courses:
TMMV 15 Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer

Course organization:
The basic concepts and the theory will be presented at the lectures and problem solving related to the theory will be done at the calculus classes.

Course content:
1. Kinetic gas theory and Thermodynamics Definition of temperature, volume, pressure and internal energy, The ideal gas law, ideal and real gases, collision rate, mean free path. The laws of thermodynamics, specific heat capacity, work, heat exchange, entropy. Isothermal, isobaric, adiabatic, isovolumic processes. Presentation of the Carnot cycle, the Otto cycle, heat pumps and Clapeyron's equation. 2. Waves Presentation of the basic concepts in wave theory. Harmonic motion, energy transport, wave impedance, interference, longitudinal and transverse waves. Standing waves. Reflection absorption and transmission. Polarisation, interference and diffraction Brewster's law, active optics, the doppler effect, acoustic waves. 3. Measurement technology Introduction to measurement technology. Experimental techniques will be used to study wave phenomena. Furthermore, the students will solve problems using an experimental problem solving technique including problem formulation, dimensional analysis and error calculation.
