/MOLEKYLFYSIK/

Advancement level:
C

Aim:
Quantum mechanical description and spectroscopic determination of the structure of atoms and molecules. Relation between the microscopic and macroscopic properties of matter. Biological applications of molecular physics: basic principles of photosynthesis.

Prerequisites:
TAMS 10, TFFM 50, TFFY 19, TFKE01 and TFKE 05

Course organization:
Lectures

Course content:
* Application of basic quantum mechanics to the theoretical description of atomic and molecular structures. * Experimental techniques for the determination of molecular structures: Rotati-onal, vibrational, electronic and resonance spectroscopies. * Relation between microscopic and macroscopic properties of matter: Basic concepts of statistical thermodynamics (definition and interpretation of: population, configuration, Boltzmann distribution, partition function, internal energy in terms of the partition function, canonical ensemble, entropy). * Molecular physics in biological systems: The basic principles of photochemistry and their application to photosynthesis are introduced in connection with electron spectroscopy (absorption of light, electronic transitions between excited states, primary photochemical processes: vibrational relaxation, fluorescence, quenching by intersystem crossing, internal conversion, photochemical reactions, phosphorescence, quantum yield).
