TFFY61 Atomic- and Molecular Physics, ECTS-points
/ATOM- OCH MOLEKYLFYSIK/

Advancement level:
C

Aim:
This course is designed to reach several goals simultaneously: an understanding of the electronic structure of hydrogen-like atoms; the construction of the electronic structure of diatomic, polyatomic and polymeric molecules; experience in giving oral reports.

Prerequisites:
TFFY17 Modern Physics, TFFY54 Quantum Mechanics II

Supplementary courses:
TFFY03 Molecular electronics

Course content:
Beginning with academic year 1991/92, the content of this course has been changed in three different ways: (1) The "atomic" part now consists only of an introduction to the molecule portion, which is directed towards new organic materials for applications in future molecular-based electronics. The aim is to describe the basic quantum chemical and quantum physical properties of atoms to be used to obtain an understanding of the electronic structure of molecules, macromolecules and polymers. This course is given as an overview, and thus, is non-mathematical. Participants will learn to "draw pictures" of molecular orbital wave functions, based on the properties of the constituent atoms and the symmetry of the molecule. A discussion of measurement methods will be included. Laboratory visits and guest lecturers will be arranged as needed. (2) In connection with the internationalisation of the university, the course is given in English. (3) In response to the university's desire for new methods of examination, and as preparation for presentation of undergraduate thesis reports, the final exam will consist of an oral report (given in English or Swedish) on specified scientific papers and/or portions of the material covered in the lectures.

Course literature:
Scientific journal papers and other support material will be handed out during the course.

TEN1Oral reports, partially evaluated by class members. Alternatives can be arranged as necessary.
Course language is Swedish.
