Aim:
The purpose of the course is to give a good understanding of the principles and consequences of the special and the general theory of relativity.

Prerequisites:
Recommended courses: TFFY 37/39 Electromagnetic Field Theory, TFFY98 Classical Electrodynamics, and TFFY43 Analytical mechanics.

Course organization:
The course is presented on 42 lecture hours.

Course content:
The postulates of special relativity, Lorentz-transformations, high energy dynamics, transformation properties of electromagnetic fields, the electromagnetic field tensor. Basic tensor calculus. The postulates of general relativity. Einstein's equations of motion, Einstein's field equations, Schwarzschild's solution of the field equations. The deviation of light in a gravitational field, the perihelion of Mercury and the gravitational redshift is computed and related to the observed data. Black holes. An introduction to relativistic cosmolgy.
